The Pambula Baptist Church (PBC) invites adults and children of the Bega Valley Shire who were affected by
the 2019-2020 bushfires to submit entries to an Art and/or Writing Competition.
PLEASE NOTE: only one entry per person is allowed for each category.
The purpose of the Competition is:
1. to provide an avenue for participants to explore, reflect on and express their feelings about their
experience of the bushfires, and their reactions or responses to them, with particular emphasis on recovery,
resilience and growth, and/or
2. to promote opportunities for healing from trauma through creativity and self-expression.
Eligibility
-
1. To be eligible to enter the competition applicants must submit their entries by the due date
(10th September, 2023 – midnight), in the required form for their category, and in compliance
with all other conditions of entry.
Applicants:
-
(a). must be 18 years of age or over, or
-
(b). if under 18 years, must provide written consent of a parent or guardian that they may enter the
competition and undertaking that they will meet the conditions of entry; (see submission form)
-
(c). must reside in the Bega Valley Shire and have so resided during the 2019-2020 bushfire period.
-
2. Applicants must comply with the following conditions:
-
(a). maintain anonymity during the period of judging of entries in the competition. Numbers will be
allocated to each entry to ensure the impartiality and integrity of the judging process and names will
only be displayed once judging is complete.

(b). Artworks must be created or be able to be exhibited in physical media.
Acceptable media would include oil, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, pencil, pen, multimedia, digital, etc
(no photography)

(c). Digitally created art will be accepted but you must print out your digital art for physical
exhibition according to the same requirements and limitations as for other adult and high school art
works. The most common Digital canvas size is 4000 x3000 pixels. You can also use any standard sizes for
Digital printing, up to A3.

(d). Applicants may only submit their own original art work or written work which they personally
created
and which has not been previously exhibited or published.

(e). Artwork must not exceed the size of A3 paper (plus up to a 5 cm Matt where appropriate).

(f). Primary school children’s entries, including written entries, may be mounted on card-stock, but
must
not exceed the size permitted for adult and high school students’ entries
-
(g). All Adult and High school artworks selected for exhibition will be required to be ready for hanging
with D rings and wire. Matted artworks (ie unframed, foam core, other mediums) should be delivered
protected
using a covering such as cellophane, shrink wrap, laminating, board corner edge pieces or similar.
How to Enter
All entries must be submitted online by visiting the BEYOND THE BUSHFIRES website at
www.beyondthebushfires.org.au and following the instructions provided.
Applicants will be advised if their entry is selected for physical exhibition should the number of entries
exceed the available exhibition space. If space is available all entries will be exhibited.
Closing Date for Entries : Sunday, 10th September, 2023 at 12 am (midnight)
Preparation of entry submitted online (Note: these conditions may not apply to all primary
school
children’s entries).
Submit entry digitally in the form required for their category by the closing date for entries.
Art Entry Digital image files must meet the following specifications:
Paintings must be in physical or digital media (no photography), and must be submitted initially online
as follows
- (a). JPG files only.
- (b). 300 DPI resolution (Please try to keep the file size under 10 MB to ensure proper loading).
- (c). Do NOT send images of artwork which has been framed or contains watermarks. Where
appropriate,
paintings should be matted and mounted on foam core of not more than 5mm.
- (d). PBC may crop your images for formatting purposes for use in presentations or promotions.
Written Entry must meet the following specifications:
- (a). be in Word format
- (b). be in Times New Roman font size 12,
- (c). be double-spaced
- (d). show Title of Work (if any) and
- (f). not exceed 1500 words .
- (g). the author’s full name must be provided, but not included in or attached to the written work, to
maintain anonymity for judging.
Exhibition Preparation
There will be a public exhibition at PBC of as many as possible of appropriate entrants works.
In the week commencing October 9th, all entrants will receive email notification regarding the exhibition,
and if their work has been selected for exhibition.
If there is not enough space for all submissions, only selected works will be exhibited.
Entrants will be asked to deliver selected works to the exhibition between 16-19 October, 2023.
Entrants will be able to pick up these art works after 4pm on final exhibition day, 29th
October 2023.
Adult and High School artworks are to be delivered complete with D rings and wire ready for hanging.

Delivery Dates/Times: Monday 16th -Thursday 19th / 9am-5pm.
Winner Notification
Winners will be announced on Opening Night at the Exhibition (Friday Oct 20th: Opening Night
5pm-9pm), and advised by phone or email following the Exhibition.
Prizes
Criteria of Judging
The artwork and written work submitted to the competition, will be judged based on the following elements of
artistic expression:
-
1. Interpretation and the clarity of the theme, to the viewer or reader.
-
2. Creativity, uniqueness, and originality of the depicted theme.
-
3. Quality of artistic composition and overall design based on the theme.
-
4. For Art: Colour and tone. Balance of image within its space.
-
5. Overall impression of the art. What is the effect of the artwork or written work in general and as a
whole?
-
6. Overall, does the artwork or written work stand on its own as a complete and outstanding piece of
work?
Display and Awards Presentation
Winners will be announced at the Opening Night of the Exhibition on Friday, 20th October 2023.
If appropriate, all Art entries will be on Display at Pambula Baptist Church from October 20th to
29th, 2023.
The appropriate written entries from Primary School Children will also be on display. It is intended to make
available a book containing some of the written entries alongside selected artworks.

User Rights
Artists/writers who submit their artwork for the competition and have any of their
submitted artwork or written work chosen for participation in that competition agree to the following:

(a). That PBC be granted usage of the chosen artwork only for display, marketing and promotional
purposes
- (b). PBC will credit each image, with their Artist Name and Image Name.
- (c). Otherwise, the Artist shall maintain all copyrights of any images that are submitted to the
Competition.
- (d). By entering this competition you are granting PBC a license to reproduce images of your artwork
for the
purpose of
advertising this Competition.
- (e). Unless an entrant specifically opts out in writing, by entering the Competition, applicants give
permission to PBC to include their submissions (if chosen) in the book intended to be produced
containing art and
written entries to the competition. Any images or written works selected for inclusion will be credited
with the
artist’s or writer’s name and particulars of the work where relevant. Further, the artists and writers
understand and agree that no compensation will be paid for the inclusion into the book.

Sales
Any sales of works are to be negotiated by the creator of the work and the purchaser and works should not be
removed from the exhibition before it’s conclusion. PBC will not be involved in any sales process.
Disputes
All Judges’ decisions are final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into regarding Judges’
decisions.
Release and Limitations of Liability
By participating in the Competition, entrants agree to release and hold harmless PBC, and each of
its members (the Released Parties) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of
participation in the Art Competition or receipt or use of the prizes, including, without limitation,
errors that may occur in the administration of the Art Competition, the announcement of the winner,
the cancellation or postponement of the event and/or the incorrect downloading of the application,
the processing of entries, application downloads or in any Competition-related materials; or injury,
death, losses or damages of any kind, to persons or property which may be caused, directly or
indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrants’ participation in the competition. Entrants further
agree that in any cause of action, the Released Parties liability will be limited to the cost of
entering and participating in the Art Competition, and in no event shall entrants be entitled to
receive legal fees. Released Parties are also not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate
information, whether caused by site users, tampering, hacking, or by any equipment or programming
associated with or utilised in the Competition. Entrants waive the right to claim any damages
whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.
